CSL's $500 Spice Mi700 DroidPad runs Froyo, looks awfully familiar

Seen this fellow before? Look closer. Seeing any similarities? For all intents and purposes, CSL's new Spice Mi700 DroidPad is just a rebadged Viewpad 7 / Camangi FM600, and given that CSL was also responsible for manufacturing the JooJoo, we'd say these guys know a thing or two about building a tablet. The device ships with Qualcomm's 600MHz MSM722, stock Android 2.2 (Froyo), the same nasty widgets that ship on FM600, a total lack of Flash support and no access to paid apps via the App Market. There's also a 3 megapixel camera on the rear, a VGA webcam on the front, WVGA capacitive touchpanel (7-inch), inbuilt WiFi / WWAN / Bluetooth, a microSD card slot and a 3.5mm headphone jack. It's said to be available starting this month for $500, but early reviews aren't exactly giving it two thumbs up -- crank 'er down to $250 and we suspect those views will shift.CSL's $500 Spice Mi700 DroidPad runs Froyo, looks awfully familiar originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 30 Sep 2010 14:07:00 EDT. Millionaire Segway importer killed after rolling off cliff riding his own device

Filed under: Etc., Safety, Technology, UKAccording to the BBC, Jimi Heselden, the CEO of Hesco Bastion, was killed on Sunday, September 26 when he apparently rode his Segway off of a cliff and into a river. Hesco Bastion sells Segway self-balancing scooters in the UK market.

According to the story, police were called after reports came in that a man had fallen into a wharf in West Yorkshire. Heselden and a "Segway-type device" were found in the water, and the scooter mogul was pronounced dead at the scene. Heselden made his fortune in the manufacturing sector and founded his corporation in the tough neighborhood where he grew up.

Heselden was also a generous philanthropist, donating a total of 23 million to various charities during his life. Earlier this month, the 62-year-old businessman donated 10 million to a Leeds community organization. The BBC quoted a spokesperson for Hesco Bastion as saying Heselden will be remembered both for his generosity and his pride in the Leeds area. Thanks to everyone for the tips.

First Super Hi-Vision broadcast from UK to Japan is one for the geeklopedia

Super Hi-Vision is still very experimental, but the BBC and NHK's first UK-to-Tokyo SHV broadcast trial of a live musical set by the The Charlatans hints it is inching closer to commercial viability. A NHK-developed camera -- one of three in existence -- made it all possible, and featured a specialized lens and optical data transmitter to handle the retina-confounding 7680 x 4320 pixel signal. This SHV trial was also the first to use a blazingly fast 24Gb/s internet connection to broadcast in lieu of more expensive satellite transmissions used in previous tests. As if the brouhaha wasn't bleeding-edge enough, a lucky few at the BBC could even view the show on a prototype 103-inch plasma television developed by NHK to see a mere quarter of the signal's massive resolution. Sure, this may not be the kind of event kids will learn about in class someday, but it certainly makes us feel like giddy little school boys. To learn more, watch a behind the scenes BBC video on the event embedded after the break.

DLS Review: Dropbox for Android, now you have access to your cloud storage wherever you go

Note: Dropbox for BlackBerry was released today -- and an updated version for iOS was also released. This is a review for the Android version, but I believe all three are functionally very similar.

Using Dropbox on a mobile device is an odd amalgam of emerging technologies. On the one hand you have the cloud --and everyone loves the flexibility that the cloud brings -- but on the other, when you're on the move, head hunkered over your smartphone, do you really need access to anything other than documents?

Having said that, there are certainly unconventional uses for Dropbox on your smartphone. You can stream music and video straight from your Dropbox, for example -- but why not just load up your phone before you leave? Streaming high-quality content over public Wi-Fi or costly 3G isn't the best idea in the world.

Still, despite an inherent lack of real-world usefulness, Dropbox for Android definitely works, and it works well. You can upload photos, videos, music and text files directly from your phone, and immediately share them with the db.tt URL shortener.
Dropbox for Android is so tidy and full-featured, that it's best if I start with a big over-arching statement that sets the tone: Dropbox for Android does everything a Dropbox user could want. Now I will work backwards and explain the few things that are missing, or that don't quite work as they should.

First of all, you can't move files from your main folder into the Public folder. You'd think that it would just be a matter of selecting 'Move to...' from the context menu, but no cigar.

Then, for some odd reason, you can't view the basic 'Getting Started' or 'How to use the Public folder' RTF files. It says the 'ROM file type not supported' -- why...?

Uploading files direct from your phone seems to work for new text files, and videos shot with your camera -- but not photos. Instead, you get a rather unhelpful '0 of 1 files uploaded successfully' error message.

Other than that, the app works fantastically. You can share short URLs to files in your Dropbox, and you can also upload files to Dropbox using Android's contextual 'Share' option. You can upload music straight from your media player, for example. You can't upload Gmail email attachments directly, however -- you have to save them first.

All in all, if you have a valid reason for accessing your Dropbox on the move, this Android app (and its BlackBerry and iOS brethren) could be very handy indeed.

Dropbox for Android Tech Specs

Installed Size -- 2.12MB, but it caches some files (images? text files?)
Speed/Responsiveness -- Excellent, no slow-down registered (Android 1.6 @ 600MHz, LG GT540 Swift)
User Interface -- Very minimal, but full-featured (except for not being able to move files!) Also has a 'search' function; neat
Configurability & Extensibility -- Very few settings can be changed, but then again, Dropbox isn't a very configurable service...
License -- Free, closed-source

Bookmarklet lets you destroy Web pages one element at a time, Asteroids style!

AdBlock is so lame. I mean, all it does it prevent ads from being displayed on Web pages. Where's the sport? Where are the explosions? I want some satisfaction from my advert eradication! Satisfaction like the kind you can only find in vintage arcade games.

Thankfully there's this incredibly practical bookmarklet that turns any website into a search-and-destroy mission. Click your button and the ship appears. You're then free to fly around and blast any element to pieces. So long, Eric Schmidt! Take that, Evony banner!

And no, I don't actually expect anyone to replace AdBlock with this. At least not until it comes with its own retro soundtrack and pew-pew noises...

Clear WiMAX router passes the FCC without a scratch

The world is not suffering from a dearth of WiMAX routers, but Clear has just a bit of room in their stable: while they offer 4G modems that plug into your computer over USB or Ethernet, along with battery-powered WiFi hotspots, they don't offer any home routers that do the WiFi thing, router thing, and WiMAX thing all-in-one. If this sounds like soft spot in their lineup to you, you'll be happy to know that an honest to goodness plug-it-into-a-wall 802.11n router with WiMAX, Clear branding, and possibly even a VoIP plug has just passed through the FCC. Will it change everything? Maybe.Clear WiMAX router passes the FCC without a scratch originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 29 Sep 2010 09:16:00 EDT. DropMocks is a beautifully simple, HTML5-powered photo sharing site

I'm a big fan of Gmail's HTML5-powered drag-and-drop attachment feature, and I've been waiting to see it pop up in other web apps. Thanks to Ryan Wagner over at CyberNet, I discovered DropMocks -- an amazingly simple little photo sharing site which offers the same functionality.

Open your pictures folder, select a few images, and drag them onto a DropMocks tab in a supported browser (Firefox 4 or Chrome 6 or 7). Once the upload is complete, you'll receive a short(ish) URL to share with your friends.
Multiple images are supported as well. Drag in 5 or 6 favorites, and DropMocks attaches them all to the same URL.

Clicking the previous or next image (or clicking a filename in the navigation box) causes it to slide into focus.

No account is required to use DropMocks, but if you do want to keep tabs on multiple uploads all you need to do is sign in with your Google account. It's also totally free to use, at least for the time being.

DropMocks is about as easy as it gets when it comes to sharing photos between your desktop and the web, and it's well worth adding to your bookmarks. It's certainly earned a place in mine.DropMocks is a beautifully simple, HTML5-powered photo sharing site originally appeared on Download Squad on Wed, 29 Sep 2010 09:10:00 EST. Amarok-based Clementine gets massive upgrade

Clementine is a great little audio player for Windows, and the recent update to version .5 has brought a lengthy list of new features. Not least among them is support for USB-connected MP3 players -- including iPods and iPhones!

My iPod touch 3G was recognized, but I couldn't get Clementine to establish a connection. My wife's little Sony E344, on the other hand, worked flawlessly.

What else has been added? There are better library control, organization, and sorting tools, automatic transcoding for connected MP3 players, and the ability to drag-and-drop songs between playlists. Want more? How about the ability to use a Wiimote to control Clementine?

Clementine's best new feature, however, has to be the All Glory to the Hypnotoad plug-in. Take the jump to see what it looks like, but don't stare too long -- lest you fall victim to the awesome powers of the Hypnotoad!

Pay a visit to the Clementine changelog for more details about what's new. Clementine runs on Windows, Mac, and Linux and is well worth a download.

A list of Google Instant's banned words and phrases

A fantastic list of banned, no-we-shall-not-auto-complete-that Google Instant phrases has been compiled. At the moment there's a list of about 250, but we're certain it will quickly grow as the community prods and probes Google's new Instant search.

It shouldn't really come as a surprise that Google has a blacklist for Google Instant -- after all, the vast majority of searchers won't be looking for anything on the list -- but it does surprise me that there's no way to turn off the blacklisting. Even with SafeSearch Filtering turned off, the blacklist is still triggered.

It wouldn't be hard for Google to provide real Google Instant for those that want it. Perhaps that config option is coming -- or perhaps this is one of Google's larger steps into controlling our Web-surfing experience.A list of Google Instant's banned words and phrases originally appeared on Download Squad on Tue, 28 Sep 2010 12:00:00 EST. Paris Preview: Exagon Furtive e-GT is a range-extended super-electric coupe [w/video]

Exagon Furtive e-GT - Click above to watch the video after the jump

Born of Exagon Engineering, constructor of many a race car (including the eight ice-melting machines that contested the Trophée Andros Electrique last season), Exagon Motors has uncloaked a new street machine for a handful of French journalists, and the car's performance numbers will probably raise more eyebrows than its looks.

The 2+2 is said to achieve a Tesla Roadster-beating 0-60 time of 3.5 seconds with twin Siemens motors producing 340 horsepower. The all-important, all-electric range is similar to the Silicon Valley speedster as well, with 400 kilometers (248.5 miles) claimed as the distance possible before the need for its on-board gasoline motor to kick in to take you the next 400 kms.

It appears the French manufacturer could begin production as soon as 2012. As far as the price goes, we're going to guess this is is one of those, "if you have to ask, you can't afford it" type of deals. Still, we'll ask anyway when we check it out for ourselves in the metal. Or carbon fiber. Or whatever it is. In the meantime, you can get a great look, inside and out, in the video reveal awaiting you after the break.

Nitro PDF Reader is a powerful, free Adobe Reader alternative

There are all sorts of compelling reasons to try an alternative PDF reader, security not being the least. Adobe Reader is also quite stingy with its functionality - you can't even annotate PDFs.
Nitro PDF Reader is an alternative reader with a modern-looking interface, and it offers generous annotation options. Unlike Foxit Reader, Nitro doesn't appear to watermark your PDF when you annotate it. You can highlight sections of the document, add text, add sticky-notes, and stamp your signature (not a digital signature - just a scanned one).
If you're lucky, you may also be able to extract graphics and text from your PDF. Ironically, I was unable to extract the images from Nitro's own sample PDF (the Welcome file that comes with the reader). Another thing you should know is that it's quite a memory hog. I tried the same document with both Foxit and Nitro; Foxit clocked in at 8MB, while Nitro consumed a whopping 63MB. Again, this is for the same exact one-page document. This is even more than Acrobat Reader 9.3, which consumed 50MB for that same document.
Still, if you've got a little RAM to spare (and most of us do), I think Nitro is a worthy contender, if only for its annotation capabilities and simple interface.Nitro PDF Reader is a powerful, free Adobe Reader alternative originally appeared on Download Squad on Tue, 21 Sep 2010 11:00:00 EST. Ping finally gets proper iTunes integration

Call me crazy, but if you're going to integrate a new social network into your desktop media library app, it might be a good idea for users to be able to share the items in their library from the get-go. That wasn't the case with Ping, however.

When it launched, songs could only be shared from the iTunes Store -- and who wants to dig around in the Store to find a song that is already in their local library just to share it on Ping? Not me, that's for sure.

With the latest update to iTunes, however, Ping is actually integrated with iTunes. As you play songs or search through your library, you can now click and post to Ping. It's much simpler, more logical, and the way Ping should have worked in iTunes from the beginning. There's also a sidebar that displays relevant information from across Ping about the artist you've selected.

I'm still not going to use Ping, but I'm glad to see that Apple moved quickly to fix what was a fairly silly gap in functionality.Ping finally gets proper iTunes integration originally appeared on Download Squad on Mon, 27 Sep 2010 09:00:00 EST. Teenage Engineering OP-1 synthesizer gets priced at $799, can't hold out on us much longer

Not since the debut of the Tenori-On have we seen so much buzz surrounding a niche music maker, and Teenage Engineering's OP-1 might just be the most anticipated synthesizer in the history of mankind. We've already seen just what it's capable of, and now it's starring in its very own music video. Better still, it's inching ever closer to shipping, with a recent newsletter affirming that it's 90 percent complete with respect to functionality. We're also told that it'll ship with a half dozen synthesizer engines and two sampler types, and a beta test is said to be "approaching." The outfit has just received its "golden sample" for the keyboard module, and it's waiting for a few more component suppliers to come through before belting out a final ship date. But hey -- at least you know it'll run $799 / €799, eventually. No time like the present to start pinching those pennies, right?Continue reading Teenage Engineering OP-1 synthesizer gets priced at $799, can't hold out on us much longerTeenage Engineering OP-1 synthesizer gets priced at $799, can't hold out on us much longer originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 27 Sep 2010 10:48:00 EDT. Amazon bringing Kindle app to BlackBerry PlayBook, loves making Kindle apps

One of the great original fears when Amazon built the Kindle was that they were after some iTunes / iPod-style walled garden ecosystem. And while, sure, Kindle is a walled garden ecosystem, those walls sure are extensive! Amazon just announced that it will be supporting the new BlackBerry PlayBook tablet, in addition to the BlackBerry mobile app they've already got. There aren't any specific details about this app, but Amazon is all about the consistent user experience, with features like WhisperSync keeping your copy of Neal Stephenson perfectly synced across a myriad of devices, so there's nothing much to say we suppose. We are sure, however, that page turns will be blazing with that dual core processor.Continue reading Amazon bringing Kindle app to BlackBerry PlayBook, loves making Kindle appsAmazon bringing Kindle app to BlackBerry PlayBook, loves making Kindle apps originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 27 Sep 2010 18:11:00 EDT. Start-stop tech might be in your next new car... are you ready? [w/poll]

At a stop light. In the drive-thru. In your driveway. Stop-start technology turns off the engine whenever the vehicle is on and the driver's foot is on the brake. The merits of the technology are hard to ignore; fuel economy savings as high as 15 percent. But while stop-start has been widely adopted in Europe, here in the U.S. the only non-hybrid vehicle to feature the tech is the Porsche Panamera.

Part of the reason stop-start hasn't taken off in the States is that many Environmental Protection Agency tests don't take stops into account during testing. And without gaining precious miles per gallon in EPA fuel economy testing, many customers will have a problem footing the bill for the the technology's otherwise reasonable $500 price tag. But as testing methods change and fuel economy standards become more stringent, stop-start is coming closer to making its way into your next vehicle. General Motors, Ford and Chrysler are among the automakers looking to incorporate the technology in U.S.-market vehicles by or before 2014.

Stop-start is relatively seamless in operation and imperceptible to most users. When you begin deceleration or come to a stop, the engine cuts off. When you lift your foot off the pedal, the engine fires back up. The upside is considerably improved fuel economy in city driving. There isn't much downside other than the change we Americans tend not to embrace. We're pretty sure we're ready for start-stop. Are you? Take the poll below to let us know where you stand.

Crazy, beautiful human being designs 3D raycaster engine for Arduino

Look, not everybody gets to be super smart. Some of us have to struggle along with our mediocre intellects and just bask in the glory of genius. Like this time: we ran into Adam Wolf at Maker Faire in New York, and while many burgeoning hackers were using their Arduino to flip LEDs on and off in vaguely interesting ways, Adam was showing off a 3D raycaster engine. It's like witnessing some sort of alternate history where Wolfenstein 3D came out for Atari first. Just to give you an idea of the technical challenge: half of the Arduino's memory is used up by the frame buffer alone! The game is controlled and displayed using the Video Game Shield Arduino add-on from Wayne and Layne (Adam is Wayne), which enables RCA video output and compatibility with Wii nunchucks for dual analog control. Adam actually plans to add enemies and make a full game out of his engine, just to rub it in. Need some visual proof to believe all this? Check out a video after the break. The Video Game Shield will be up for purchase on September 29 for around $22, or you can buy it at the Maker Faire this weekend. Word Domination helps you become a crossword puzzle monster

Quick, I need an eight-letter word that starts with B, and letter six is R! Any ideas?
If questions like this make you draw a blank, Word Domination can come in very handy the next time you're struggling with those last few words of a crossword puzzle. It gave me 97 different results for this particular query, including "bescorch" and "bevatron."
I wasn't really sure what a bevatron was, so I clicked the word. Word Domination then transported me to the bevatron word page, where I discovered that it's a historic particle accelerator. Now I feel a bit less ignorant, because it's more of a proper noun that "just a word." But I guess that, somewhere in the world, a sadistic crossword puzzle author might call for "historic particle accelerator, six letters, horizontal."
Word Domination comes up with more ordinary words, too. The list is sorted alphabetically - not by frequency. The whole site feels very clean, modern, and fun to use. There's a "simple mode," too, which supports the asterisk wildcard (like b*tron) and doesn't make you specify the number of letters that the results should contain.
Their "About Us" page is empty, so I can't tell you who's behind the site, but as long as it works, it works!Word Domination helps you become a crossword puzzle monster originally appeared on Download Squad on Wed, 22 Sep 2010 11:20:00 EST. T-Mobile G2 won't have free tethering, but may have WiFi calling

We all want free tethering, and everyone who has ever used it wants UMA on the T-Mobile G2.  It looks like we'll be getting half of what we're asking, as TmoNews has received some inside information (screenshot after the break) that the Froyo hotspot features have been disabled, but a new feature called WiFi calling is currently being tested on HTC's latest and greatest slider. We're not surprised that the Froyo hotspot and tethering has been disabled, we said all along that we doubt we will ever see free tethering on a carrier-subsideized phone.  I'm sure that's something that the hackers third-party Android developers will figure out in short order.  The WiFi calling is a whole 'nother animal.  TmoNews has an internal screen grab with some very interesting info (again, after the break), as well as the picture above that shows WiFi calling installed on a G2.  I'm pretty sure that the WiFi calling is the pseudo-UMA from Kineto that we looked at last week, that lacks the seamless handoff to cellular that we're used to seeing from "normal" UMA.  I'm also pretty confident that we won't be seeing the G2 launch with WiFi calling on board, it will come in a software update or be downloadable from T-Mobile.To end this post full of if's and but's, there is some great news -- an internal T-Mobile document shows that WiFi calling will be available on any voice plan, with no additional account features needed.  That screenshot is after the break.  [TmoNews, here and here]

Print Edit for Firefox lets you easily format Web pages for printing

Some Web pages are easier to print than others. Some provide printer-friendly versions, or printer-friendly CSS, but what do you do when you need to print out a page that isn't so friendly? What if a Web page, printed as-is, would use up a ton of toner or would spread across multiple pages in a confusing hodgepodge of menu items, superfluous banners, and useless navigation links?
Well, Print Edit is one option. This Firefox add-on hooks into the Print Preview mode, and it adds an Edit button. Once you click Edit, you're returned to Firefox (i.e., it seems like you've exited Print Preview mode), but now, a red frame appears around any page element that your mouse hovers over.
You click all of the elements that you wish to hide or delete, and then you click Hide or Delete. You can also choose to Undo, Hide All Except, or Delete All Except.
The difference between "deleting" and "hiding" is that hiding does not affect page layout. You basically get a blank spot where the element used to be. Deleting an element does impact page layout - so if you delete a banner ad, you could make the rest of the page use that space for text (and thus require less paper for printing).
Once you're done formatting the page, click Preview to see the result. If you're happy with it, print away. If not, you can always click Edit again and continue tweaking it.
The fastest way to use this add-on is to just select the content area you want to keep and click Delete All Except. I tried this with its own add-on page at addons.mozilla.org, and I could get just the add-on's description - with no images, menu items, or anything else. It was very clean and useful.Print Edit for Firefox lets you easily format Web pages for printing originally appeared on Download Squad on Fri, 24 Sep 2010 17:55:00 EST. Ford's Mulally: "We cannot make a business case" for composites

There's been plenty of talk about carmakers moving to lighter materials like carbon fiber to reduce weight, improve fuel economy and enhance the driving experience. Two years ago, Honda and Nissan formed a consortium to research the mass-market implementation of carbon fiber. Last year, BMW launched its own joint venture to do the same. Lamborghini joined the party when it opened its own CF research center earlier this year. In practice, though, use of composites for large panels is still limited to spendier offerings like the BMW M3, Audi R8 V10 Spyder and the exotic classes.

Ford CEO Alan Mulally gives a reason for that. "We cannot make a business case for composites in the auto industry," he says, citing the work left to be done on producing better steel and alloys. Mulally adds that getting enough composites to meet a volume maker's needs and the sheer cost of production nixes the prospect for now. Instead, thermosetting plastics - different than thermoplastics - are a solution more near-at-hand.

Apple, Adobe, Google, Intel Intuit and Pixar: now free to cold call each other's employees

Attaboy, DoJ! Out of (almost) nowhere, the United States Department of Justice announced today that it was requiring six well-known technology outfits to stop entering into "anticompetitive employee solicitation agreements," and we're guessing you will have heard just a few of these names: Adobe, Apple, Google, Intel, Intuit and Pixar. As the story goes, these six companies were all mixed up (but not all together, mind you) in agreements that forbid each other from cold calling employees from a rival firm in order to offer them a different job.

According to the DoJ, those arrangements acted as a "significant form of competition to attract highly skilled employees," and it has now filed a civil antitrust complaint today along with a proposed settlement that, "if approved by the court, would resolve the lawsuit." We're also told that some of the agreements were put into place as early as 2005, and they were "formed and actively managed by senior executives of these companies." Yikes. Hit the source link for the full report, and feel free to call back that "Unknown" caller that keeps hitting you up on your Adobe line -- it's probably Pixar with a seven-figure offer.Apple, Adobe, Google, Intel Intuit and Pixar: now free to cold call each other's employees originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 24 Sep 2010 22:37:00 EDT. Netflix now streams unlimited TV and movies in Canada for $7.99 per month

As a Canadian living about 600 miles from the nearest metropolitan center, this is huge news: Netflix has opened its doors in Canada. The service is streaming-only -- no rentals by mail as in the U.S. -- but I'll take it.

For $7.99 a month, Canadians can watch all the TV shows and movies they want via their Wii, PS3, or PC -- Xbox 360 support is coming soon. Better still, your first month of Netflix viewing won't cost you a cent. The selection here in Canada isn't nearly what it is in the States, but that will certainly improve in time.

Panasonic's hair-washing robot: rinse, kill, repeat

If Panasonic can build an exercise horse then surely a robot that washes your hair should come as no surprise. Imagine being lifted from your robotic bed by a plush care-assist robot and placed into a chair for an automatic shampoo and scalp massage. That is the future of care for the elderly and sick in Japan, or the rich and lazy everywhere else. Panasonic's hair-washing robot scans each human head three-dimensionally to apply just the right amount of pressure during the shampoo, massage, and rinse phases. It recognizes repeat customers and then applies that person's preferred massage course using its human-like sixteen "fingers." Firefox finally gets "paste and go" in FF4 nightly

Other browsers like Chrome and Opera can do it, and they've been doing it for ages. There are add-ons that let Firefox do it, but if it's such a useful feature, why hasn't it been included out-of-the-box?

"It" is paste and go, and like sync functionality, it has finally been permanently bolted on to Firefox. In recent nightly builds of Firefox 4, you can right-click to paste a URL and go to it without pressing enter -- or paste and go to search any copied text. To be fair, you could already right-click highlighted text and choose to search with your default engine in Firefox, but the absence of paste and go has often made me wonder "why?"

It's yet another feature addition to Firefox 4, which is racking up quite a lengthy list during its beta phase. As always, you can download the latest nightly build of Firefox 4 from Mozilla or check for updates in Minefield's about screen.

Another common feature it seems to share with the i917 is an AMOLED screen, judging by the deeper than deep black color it's capable of pushing out. Google's Schmidt says requiring stock Android would violate 'the principle of open source'

The suggestion has been made countless times that manufacturers who customize their devices' builds of Android (that is to say, nearly all of them) should have the decency to offer users the option of reverting to a completely clean, stock version of the platform if they so choose. The concept came up at a press lunch featuring Google CEO Eric Schmidt last week, and the dude responded with an interesting explanation for why they don't require that of their partners: "if we were to put those type of restrictions on an open source product, we'd be violating the principle of open source."

Of course, "the principle of open source" is open to wild differences in interpretation, the source of well over 20 years worth of intense debate in the developer community and the reason why countless types and versions of open source licenses exist (GPL, BSD, MIT, and so on). We'd also argue that the fact that Google is allegedly placing a range of arbitrary restrictions on certified devices (that is, those that feature the Market and other Google apps) gives them the platform they need to impose one more... but hey, Schmidt's an opinionated guy, and until Android stops growing by leaps and bounds, there's probably not a great capitalism-inspired argument that can be made here. Peep the video of the luncheon after the break.Continue reading Google's Schmidt says requiring stock Android would violate 'the principle of open source'Google's Schmidt says requiring stock Android would violate 'the principle of open source' originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 24 Sep 2010 12:12:00 EDT. Good news, Apple fans. BMW has turned up the level of smart phone integration in its vehicles in a big way. The company will be showing off its new ConnectedDrive system at the 2010 Paris Motor Show. The swank tech not only boasts Bluetooth wizardry and a text-to-speech function that will allow drivers to access text messages, memos, emails and the like from their Blackberry, it will also work with Apple iOS4. That means that the system clicks with the latest iPhone.

But wait, there's more.

The German manufacturer is also introducing something it calls iPod Out that's designed to make the most of using Apple music players in the vehicle. There's even a handy docking system for the iPad in the back seats. What's more, BMW will offer a mobile hotspot system with ConnectedDrive so that passengers can surf the web without burning up their data plans. Welcome to the brave new world. Thanks for the tip, Chris!

Panasonic, Charlotte Motor Speedway team up for the biggest HD screen ever

It's been a bad week for Jerry Jones. Not only are the Cowboys 0-2, but Panasonic and Charlotte Motor Speedway have announced plans to take away his record for the largest HD video screen anywhere. Scheduled to debut in May 2011, the 720p, 16,000 sq ft (200 feet wide, 80 feet tall, 165,000 lbs, more specs are in the press release after the break) LED video wall will be installed along the backstretch between turns 2 and 3 at the race track allowing fans seated on the frontstretch to still see drivers shake and bake all the way around the track. A quick perusal of Wikipedia's list of top videoboards reminds of former contenders for the title -- massive screens at stadiums hosting the Kansas City Royals, Tokyo horse racing, Longhorns football and Miami Dolphins will all drop one more notch on the list.Continue reading Panasonic, Charlotte Motor Speedway team up for the biggest HD screen everPanasonic, Charlotte Motor Speedway team up for the biggest HD screen ever originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 23 Sep 2010 18:27:00 EDT. Mozilla Seabird concept phone ? and a rant

Mozilla has an interesting Seabird concept phone rendering posted to YouTube. It looks great but disappointingly it’s not real, contains technology that doesn’t yet exist at the consumer scale, and is built on top of Android.

The Android part makes me sad, not because it’s Android but because it’s not MozillaOS (GeckoOS?). Google is basically doing [...]Mozilla Seabird concept phone – and a rant is a story by TiPb. This feed is sponsored by The iPhone Blog Store. TiPb - The #1 iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch Blog

Verbatim's Clip-it is a USB drive with paperclip ambitions

It sure is hard to differentiate yourself in the highly competitive world of ever-shrinking USB storage. To avoid this trend of disregard, Verbatim has sent its latest offering off to paper management school and the results are now apparent for us to see. The new Clip-it comes with an added incision in the middle of its lilliputian body that allows it to act as a paperclip or maybe even a handsome accessory to your geek chique outfit. Verbatim makes sure to tell us (about eleventy times) that the Clip-it has scooped up a red dot Design Award for its ingenuity, and prices the thing at eminently affordable €8.99 (2GB) and €11.49 (4GB) levels. Those correspond to $12 and $15.34, respectively, meaning you could have the whole set of seven colors for less than what you'd have to spend on just one iWatch.Continue reading Verbatim's Clip-it is a USB drive with paperclip ambitionsVerbatim's Clip-it is a USB drive with paperclip ambitions originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 24 Sep 2010 01:52:00 EDT. LaHood suggests mobile phones should come with warning labels

Judging from the statistics that the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration recently released, distracted driving is a big problem here in the States. Researchers have found that one of the largest sources of distraction behind the wheel comes from hand-held devices - cell phones, smart phones, media players and the like. According to The Detroit News, Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood has mentioned that he would like to see some sort of visual warning on cell phones alerting users to the dangers of using the devices while behind the wheel.

However, the suggestion isn't likely to evolve into a full-fledged motion by NHTSA. LaHood simply made the comment off-hand during an interview, but that doesn't mean that mobile phone makers weren't paying attention. The handheld phone industry has said that it will meet with LaHood to discuss the possibility, though its products come with a warning about being careful while operating them.

Would it help? We seriously doubt it. Mobile phones have evolved into too great a temptation for most drivers to ignore while behind the wheel, and another visual warning isn't going to do too much to change that.

Toyota to provide Daimler with hybrid components, technology?

Mercedes-Benz is getting hot and heavy into hybrids, and parent company Daimler AG might be looking to a familiar name for help. Reports out of Tokyo indicate that Daimler is in talks with Toyota about getting "motors and batteries in addition to technology" to supply its hybrid needs.

The discussions have gone on for a year now, and have come to the point of detailing exactly which components Toyota will supply. Apparently, the pact could also include fuel cell technology sharing. Assuming a deal gets made, Daimler will join Ford, Nissan and Mazda on the list of Toyota partners when it comes to some aspect of hybrid tech. And if that isn't what you call "hybrid synergy drive," we don't know what is.

RealD to license ZScreen for HDTVs, bring cheap 3D glasses to the masses

Most who have seen their favorite content in 3D have seen the light, but still find it hard to look past the glasses. Any 3D glasses are worse than no glasses at all, but expensive 3D glasses make even less sense to most. So while all the consumer 3DTV glasses so far have been of the expensive active shutter variety (which keeps the price of the TVs more in line with the 2D versions), RealD announced at the 3D entertainment summit that it would license its ZScreen technology (pictured above) to 3DTV manufacturers. This means that the same inexpensive 3D glasses used in theaters could be used at home. The big question of course is how much will these 3DTVs cost, and how will the 3D quality experience compare to what active shutter glasses can offer. But to those who hate heavy, expensive 3D glasses that require batteries, this is could certainly be good news.RealD to license ZScreen for HDTVs, bring cheap 3D glasses to the masses originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 23 Sep 2010 11:40:00 EDT. Ask Mozilla a question

Filed under: Mozilla, BrowsersInstead of my usual abode deep in the lush green forests of south England, I'm currently in San Francisco. I was here for the Internet Explorer 9 beta launch (which was very cool!) Yesterday I visited Google -- and later today I will be seeing the wonderful people at Mozilla.

I have a lot of things I want to ask them, but I figured you guys might also have a few clever questions up your sleeves! So, if there's something you've always wanted to ask Mozilla, leave a comment and I'll do my best to pose your questions to the right people.Ask Mozilla a question originally appeared on Download Squad on Fri, 17 Sep 2010 12:00:00 EST. Firefox Home update adds more powerful search, private server support

Firefox Home has become one of my most-used iPhone apps, and the recent update has added a greatly-improved search function. Previously, FF Home could search your synced content. Now, however, it will actually search Google if no matches are found (check the official demo video after the fold to see it in action).

Another welcome addition is support for private servers -- you're no longer left out in the cold just because you're syncing your data somewhere other than Mozilla's default location. Firefox Home is also now available worldwide, so users everywhere can enjoy the app's desktop-to-iPhone synchronization goodness.Firefox Home update adds more powerful search, private server support originally appeared on Download Squad on Mon, 20 Sep 2010 14:22:00 EST. Netflix busted for using actors in crowd at Canadian launch event

Netflix certainly didn't have much trouble attracting interest in its Canadian launch today -- the country's waited long enough, after all -- but it looks like it nonetheless went a bit too far in its efforts to build up buzz at its press event. It turns out that many of the onlookers at the event were actually actors hired by Netflix, at least some of whom went as far as to talk to the press and pass themselves off as regular people -- regular people who happen to be really enthusiastic about Netflix, of course. An information sheet handed out to the extras reportedly even told them to "play types" and "behave as members of the public" who just "happen upon a street event for Netflix and stop by to check it out." After word of the shenanigans got out, Netflix quickly issued an apology, of sorts -- the company's VP of corporate communications, Steve Swasey, said that he was "unaware" that a script was handed out to the extras, and that "some people got carried away and it's embarrassing to Netflix."Netflix busted for using actors in crowd at Canadian launch event originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 22 Sep 2010 19:11:00 EDT. Firefox Friday: can Firefox hold off Internet Explorer 9 and Chrome?

Filed under: Internet, Mozilla, BrowsersHappy Firefox Friday, friends! In the lead up to an exciting winter, things have been heating up at Mozilla.

There's strong competition from all sides. The IE9 beta launches next week and we'll soon see whether Microsoft can transform its excellent developer previews into something which can make the end-user salivate. Chrome's hardware acceleration currently leads the pack, and will presumably find its way to the beta build very soon. Does Firefox 4 have what it takes to hold onto its wavering market share?

This war, kicked off by Google's intent to push Chrome from nerdy obscurity into the mainstream, has forced Mozilla to roll with the blows. After almost completely avoiding innovation with Firefox 3.6 -- yay, Personas! -- we're now seeing a delicious glut of additions rolling out with each and every beta build of Firefox 4.

These past two weeks have been the busiest I've ever seen Mozilla, in terms of bug fixes, new features, and new out-reach and research projects. Let's tuck in!

Firefox debuts new JagerMonkey JavaScript engine, now on the tail of Chrome and IE9

JavaScript has long been a weakness of Firefox -- or rather, it became a sore point after the initial release of Chrome showed the world just how fast JavaScript can be. With JagerMonkey, Firefox 4's JS performance will be very close to the competition.

From conversations with developers at Mozilla, I also get the feeling that raw JavaScript performance isn't their prime concern. Benchmarks are notoriously bad at depicting real-world applications -- and JavaScript can still only perform as fast as the layout engine lets it.

It's safe to say that FF4 will run your JavaScript-intensive games and Web apps just fine.
The outlook of in-the-browser 2D and 3D games is sunny

JavaScript performance certainly isn't the only measure of what a browser can do, but it is very important when it comes to browser games and calculation-intensive Web apps. Which brings me neatly on to this week's release of Mozilla Labs Gaming. Mozilla usually manages to drum up a lot of interest with its competitions and design challenges, but usually these take the form of concept brainstorms, or mock-ups for new browser features. I'm not sure whether the slower-moving and slightly-less-hip-than-it-used-to-be Mozilla can pull off a gaming competition -- but I hope I'm wrong.

Mozilla certainly has plenty of academic ties, and what with it being the start of a new school year, perhaps Open Web Gaming will be on the curriculum? In fact, looking at the sheer number and variety of today's 'open' technologies, you could create an entirely open-source curriculum! Are you listening, universities? Open video, audio, WebGL, JavaScript, SVG, geolocation.

Gamers and developers, you should take a look at Rocket Engine

I intend to do a full write-up of Rocket Engine, but in the meantime here are my initial thoughts: OMG. The website is intentionally vague, but it looks like it's a pure JavaScript games engine with an in-the-browser SDK and editor. Watch the video and have your mind blown.

It should be immediately apparent how potentially awesome a JavaScript games engine is. Rocket Pack (the developer) pulls no punches by showing the same game running on a PC, netbook and iPad -- apparently you can even design games on an iPad.

But that's not the best bit: Rocket Engine can be used to build MMOs like FarmVille. I've seen a few HTML5 and JavaScript game engines, but this is certainly the first to offer such a wide range of features. Just scroll down and have a look at what's on offer -- crazy.

Which reminds me... what's happening to that Mozilla Web App Store?

What can developers do with their games after they write them? Self-publish? Publish their game on Steam?

Everyone and their mother is working on an app store at the moment -- but not Mozilla. All of this talk of building upon Open Web technologies and shunning proprietary platforms like Native Client, yet the only outlet Firefox developers have is AMO! And that's for add-ons!

I'm certain Chrome's Web Store will open first -- not to mention the tie-in it will have with Google TV and Chrome OS installations! -- and Microsoft has spent the last few months pushing developers to write apps for IE9... but Mozilla is still only testing the waters.

If Mozilla built it, game developers would come.

This week's Firefox release round-up

To finish, here are the latest Mozilla releases, along any significant changes:

Firefox 3.6.9 -- the stable build of Firefox received a ton of bug fixes (67!) and patched no less than 14 security vulnerabilities
Firefox 3.5.12 -- yup, tons of people are still running Firefox 3.5. Some security and stability issues were fixed
Firefox 4.0 beta 5 -- and finally, FF4 beta 5 was released this week, with hardware acceleration turned on by default and the inclusion of the new Audio Data API. The hardware acceleration -- if it can be called that -- actually doesn't seem to work right now. I've asked Mozilla about it, but I haven't had a response yet
Thunderbird 3.1.3 -- yes, Thunderbird is still going! This is just a standard point release that fixes some bugs and stability issues
