Along with reports that Mercedes-Benz is stepping up its U.S. diesel presence in a big way comes news that the company is also expanding its hybrid fleet. According to Automotive News, the Silver Arrow is looking to introduce hybridized versions of the company's C-, E- and S-Class vehicles in just three years. The move is an effort to prepare for ever tightening fuel-economy legislation in both the U.S. and Europe. The report says that European buyers can expect to see the battery-operated C- and E-Class vehicles show up in Europe in 2013 and that a plug-in S-Class hybrid will debut shortly thereafter.

American buyers, meanwhile, will likely see the tech arrive in showrooms six months after their European cousins. According to Herbert Kohler, the company's head of E-Drive and future mobility, Mercedes-Benz is currently spending half of its $5.6 billion research and development budget on investigating alternative powertrains.

Combined with a heavier diesel mix, the hybrids will go a long way toward upping the Mercedes-Benz corporate average fuel economy.

Facebook to enable site-wide HTTPS and name-that-face social authentication

Tomorrow, as part of Data Privacy Day, Facebook will enable the option for site-wide HTTPS. Everything, from sending messages to stalking your friends' profiles will be encrypted, which should come as a great relief if you regularly use Facebook from public, unencrypted Wi-Fi networks. To enable it (tomorrow!), navigate to Account Settings and scroll down to Account security.

Facebook will also step up its policing of suspicious activity by using an exciting new form of CAPTCHA called "social authentication." If Facebook detects something odd with your account -- such as a login from two geographically disparate locations -- you will be asked to identify some of your friends. The idea is that hackers might have worked out your password, but they probably don't know what your friends look like. Unless you're being hacked by one of your friends, of course...

Looking forward, Facebook hopes to enable HTTPS by default, but no exact timeline is given. Incidentally, if you want to browse the entire Web while secured by HTTPS, check out our secure surfing guide.

Google Cloud Print comes to iPhone, Android via Gmail mobile website

At long last, Google has finally connected one of its apps to the much-anticipated Google Cloud Print service. You can now print from any mobile phone -- as long as it's Android 2.1 or iOS 3 or later -- to any printer that you have successfully connected to your Google Cloud Print account.

The service only works via the Gmail mobile website for now -- just visit www.gmail.com on your phone -- but presumably Google could also activate it for desktop users. An updated Android app with Cloud Print integration must surely follow, too.

If you want to set up Google Cloud Print, check the Google FAQ -- or if you just want to see what it's like, check our hands-on review.

The future of GM's OnStar could be "I've fallen and I can't get up"

OnStar mirror

At CES, OnStar introduced an aftermarket rearview mirror that could widen the company's reach to 55 million cars, including Ford, Honda and Nissan models. Now that it's made the move out of General Motors vehicles, we grabbed a moment with Greg Ross, OnStar's vice president of business extensions, and Vijay Iyer, the firm's director of corporate communications, at the Detroit Auto Show to see what other ideas are in play for the service.
  • "The brand is well known for safety and security, so we're looking for other ways to apply that," Ross said. Personal security and fall detection, such as a device for seniors, are possibilities being looked at. "It could be a safety button or similar device that knows if you've fallen down."
  • OnStar already has a tie to personal safety: as part of a pilot program, it provides crash data to the CDC and the University of Michigan that they can match accident data with medical data. After a crash, "they get a body - they know what a person looks like but they don't what happened. We add data from the accident so they can piece together the nature of the injuries, such as determining if there could be internal bleeding. It can also help us design safer vehicles, and one of the benefits is that it has given us higher priority access to 9-1-1 since the emergency personnel can be sure of what's happened."
  • On the subject of getting OnStar better and more aspirational brand awareness, Ross emphasized that OnStar is already one of the most important features for GM buyers. "We have six million customers in the U.S., Canada and China and 50 percent keep the system when the trial period ends. And OnStar wasn't the feature dropped in the recession."
  • Unlike Ford's SYNC, even though OnStar has features like Facebook integration and Bluetooth based text-to-voice, it doesn't have voice-activated control of its media features. When asked when that might come, Iyer would only say "The infotainment system will grow." Ross said, "All manufacturers can catch up with raw features, they've become commodities. Trying to figure out the human interface in a manageable way is a big thing, versus rushing things out."
  • Ross, however, feels that OnStar is fundamentally ahead of the competition because of its integration - the OnStar unit doesn't rely on communicate through your mobile phone, it is a dedicated communication device with its own phone number. "Devices want to be smart, they want to communicate. But the ability to remotely interact with the car is only possible with embedded technology, and we have that."

Kongregate Arcade returns to the Android Market with some minor changes

After being removed from the Android Market for breaking the rules, the Kongregate Arcade app is back! Yet again can you enjoy easy access to the best source of Flash games on the Web.

Kongregate Arcade was originally pulled because it itself acted as a marketplace for apps -- or at least, it appeared to. In actual fact, the app was just a portal to all of the Flash games on the Kongregate site. The original app hid the browser's address bar (why is this possible?), which made it look like everything was occurring in-app.

The changes to the app make it more obvious that the app simply links to Web pages with Flash games, rather than appearing to play games from within the app. The Arcade will now also use the browser's cache to store temporary Flash files, rather than "explicitly downloading and managing games on the SD card."

A QR code to install the app is after the break.

steering column control module - automotive part

TRW
, supplier of systems and components to automakers, has introduced its latest generation steering column control module for the Ford SuperDuty and F-150, Edge/MKX and Explorer. Why is this news, and what the heck is a steering column control module?
In the old days (the 1990s), a bunch of individual pieces were fastened to the steering column. Turn signals were a separate part from the airbag system's clockspring, which was a unique piece from the multifunction switch. Each of those bits cost something to produce and procure, not to mention the wiring required to integrate the functions into the car. Supplier problems with just one piece could idle the supply of the whole assembly for days.

Modern serial communication and control systems have created a solution for these problems, and that's the steering column control module, a single component that integrates all the functions of those many individual pieces. The amount of wiring is reduced, reliability is up thanks to new electronic techniques supplanting older wear-prone designs and with fewer contracts to secure and pieces to ship and inventory, a better per-unit cost can be negotiated. TRW's new module includes all sorts of stuff like headlamp switches, turn signals, tilt/telescope control, hazard lamps, steering angle sensor and electronic turn signal cancel, which is unique to the new Ford modules. Tuning to customer preferences reduces complaints and increases satisfaction, too. It may sound a lot more complex, putting a computerized module in place of what was once simple switches and relays, but this is a case of newer being clearly better. Full press release posted after the jump.

Ford details Powershift transmission for 2012 Focus

PowerShift six-speed transmission

The 2012 Ford Focus is an exciting piece of machinery for a variety of reasons. It puts the Focus on equal footing across the globe, along with being a stylish and well-equipped compact that should be an entertaining steer. On that last bit, Ford is hyping some of the new driver-centric technologies under the Focus' skin, beginning with the PowerShift dry-clutch six-speed automatic with its Torque Hole Filling Technology (THF). What's that? Ford's glad you asked...

When you're driving along in a car equipped with a traditional automatic transmission, you get a momentary lag after an upshift. This is known as the torque hole. Ford wanted to find a way to fill this gap, so with some trick computer modeling and enough math to last a lifetime, the Blue Oval engineers created a system where the engine and transmission talk to each other and prepare for potential torque holes. Additional torque is supplied to fill the hole and the resulting shifts are more seamless to both driver and passengers.

If you want even more geeky details, click past the jump for Ford's complete release.

Ferrari reportedly developing biometric driver aids

Ferrari 599 GTO cockpit

A true driver's car can seem to know exactly what the driver's thinking, but that's really not the case. Right?

According to the latest reports, Ferrari is developing a series of systems that will actually read a driver's mind and body to bring the relationship between man and machine that much closer. The reports stem from a patent application wherein Ferrari describes a network of technologies that will aim to read a driver's respiration, perspiration, blink rate, heart rate, blood pressure, cranial activity and other parameters, adjusting the vehicle's dynamics accordingly.

The hopefully non-invasive gizmos would be placed in the cabin ceiling, dashboard, steering wheel and seat, and are being developed in response to one simple conclusion: drivers think their abilities are beyond what they actually are. But is this one step too far in the development of electronic nannies?

Report: BMW and Mini to share plug-in hybrids

Mini badge

From the whispers we're hearing, BMW plans on mixing its DNA with Mini even further. The Bavarian-obsessed minds at BimmerFile are reporting that the German automaker is currently hard at work on a partnership with Getrag to produce a new hybrid powertrain to be shared between both BMW and Mini. Details are skimpy at the moment, but BimmerFile has ventured a few guesses as to what we can expect from the platform when it debuts. Word is that the system will likely boast a plug-in capacity that it will probably show up on larger Mini models like the Countryman and its rumored BMW counterpart.

There's also some indication that the hybridized drivetrain will keep the current 120 horsepower four-cylinder at the heart of the system. The move is only part of the BMW master plan to keep Mini as efficient as possible. BimmerFile also hints that Mini may see a small turbocharged three-cylinder engine debut in a few short years with more horsepower, less weight and greater efficiency than the current four-cylinder line up. Join those thoughts with the rumored arrival of a diesel Cooper on American soil, and it begins to look like Mini will be in a good position as fuel prices continue to edge upwards.

LauncherPro for Android hands-on: it works, but it won't wow you

The most popular home screen and 'app drawer' replacement app for Android is LauncherPro -- but I'm not sure why.

I mean, sure, it gives you a scrolling dock, and up to seven home screens -- big whoop. Maybe I'm just a bit jaded. I have recently reviewed two very good home screen apps, after all. The truth is, though, except for a nifty scrolling, customizable dock, there's simply no reason to use LauncherPro instead of ADW.Launcher -- and Zeam, which is lighter-weight and easier to use, also has a very nice scrolling dock.

In fact, the only unique feature in LauncherPro costs $3, and you can't even try it out before you buy.

With Ubuntu's shift to Qt in 11.10, an attack on the mobile sector must be imminent

Ubuntu tablet
Qt, come the end of 2011, is to become a standard component of Ubuntu 11.10. Ubuntu currently, and in the upcoming 11.04 Natty Narwhal distribution, uses Gtk+, a competing toolkit maintained by the GNOME Foundation.

When Canonical announced Ubuntu's shift away from the GNOME desktop manager in 11.04, the switch to Qt was almost a foregone conclusion; GNOME requires Gtk+, but Unity doesn't -- so why stick around? A better question to ask, though, is why Qt?

The odd, but overwhelmingly likely truth seems to be that Ubuntu is moving into the mobile sector. Unity was originally designed as a netbook or small-screen interface; and there's no denying that Unity 2D, without its shiny bells and whistles, is designed for very low-powered devices, like cheap tablets and smartphones.

Qt

That's where Qt enters the equation: Qt is the application framework used on Nokia's Symbian and Maemo phones. Qt is also fully cross-platform, with support for Windows, Mac and Linux. With Qt, developers could write a single program for Ubuntu, and have it run on desktops, laptops, tablets, and even smartphones.

But why oh why does Canonical even want to go into the mobile market? Has someone at the top lost their marbles?

Samsung Continuum software update now rolling out

Samsung Continuum owners will want to be on the lookout for an update being pushed from Verizon today. Although it is not Froyo, it is a release that contains quite a few bug fixes in it so you'll want to be sure to get it installed of you're having any weird issues. In addition to all the bug fixes, you'll also be installing VCAST apps onto your device. (Grrrr.) Firefox 4 beta 10 now available, fixes 500 bugs and nears completion

Just a few days after the release of beta 9, there is a new build to sink your teeth into. Beta 10 has no new features -- it simply squashes about 500 bugs, thus improving stability across Windows, Mac and Linux platforms. The fix that halved Firefox's start-up time sadly didn't make it into the new beta build.

If all goes to plan, beta 11 should be released in the next week, with the first release candidate rolling out in early- or mid-February. Firefox 4 final may actually launch before March!

Again, if you haven't played with Firefox 4 yet, now's the time to give it a go. We even have a guide that walks you through each of Firefox 4's new features.

Gmail enables HTML5-powered desktop notifications

Google has just flipped the switch on a new feature in Gmail: desktop notifications for new email and instant messages. It only works in Google Chrome at the moment, but Google plans to bring it to other browsers that support HTML5, like Firefox 4 and Internet Explorer 9.

If you reload your Gmail tab, you should be prompted to enable the desktop notifications -- otherwise, head into Settings, scroll down to Desktop Notifications, and choose what kind of notifications you want. You can currently toggle chat, new mail, and new important mail -- but presumably, you'll be able to select which labels will produce notifications.

138,000 Holocaust-related photos now online, powered by Google and Picasa

Yad Vashem, Israel's official memorial to Holocaust victims, in partnership with Google, has just created what can only be described as the definitive online Holocaust archive. The collection consists of 138,327 images, most of which are photos.

The collection, which represents a few years of full-time work by a handful of Googlers, has been made available just in time for the UN International Holocaust Remembrance Day, which is today. If the immense, digitized archive wasn't enough, the Google team went one step further and used OCR to transcribe any text found on the objects, which means that passports, visas and other notes can be searched for using a normal Google search. Google gives the example of searching for rena weiser, which returns her Chilean visa -- and obviously, any families searching for relatives that may have been part of the Holocaust will find this invaluable.

Because the collection seems to be based on Picasa galleries, all of the usual social functionality is built-in. You can comment on photos, and you're encouraged to share stories if you find the photo of someone you know. The only problem is that navigation of the archive seems to be a hit-and-miss affair -- there are just thousands of albums, and they're all unsorted.

In the "Request for Permission" window -- the one you have to accept before using an app on the Facebook platform -- look out for "Access my contact information", with the subtitle "Current Address and Mobile Phone Number" (see image above). You'd think that such important details would deserve a bolder warning, instead of the usual faded gray -- but obviously not.

As Sophos' Naked Security blog points out, making such details available in a landscape that is already packed full of rogue spam and scam applications puts Facebook users at even greater risk. With your full name and home address, identity theft basically becomes a no-brainer -- and can you imagine the SMS spam that awaits the unlucky Facebooker that gives his phone number to the wrong app developer?

Still, even if you're not bothered by this (and you can always remove your home address or mobile number from Facebook), you have wonder what Facebook will do next. Facebook is quickly becoming The One True Internet Hub, and the wealth of data it knows about us is terrifying. If access to incredibly sensitive data can be reduced to a small-font subtitle in a cluttered permission box, it's only a matter of time until you accidentally press "Allow" and fritter away your entire life story to a random rogue developer.
