The top Windows Phone 7 app -- YouTube -- is just a website shortcut

Sitting at the top of the Windows Phone 7 Marketplace is the most anticlimactic app of all time: YouTube.

After installing and eagerly clicking the icon I was greeted with... m.youtube.com. Yes, the YouTube app is a shortcut to the built-in Web browser. No more, no less... just a shortcut.

I suppose you could say that this is the first smartphone Web app -- but really, it's just laziness. Incidentally, did you know that Windows Phone 7 also lacks a Windows Live Messenger app? Maybe there's a Web-based client that I can use instead..

Facebook launches 'next generation messaging', sounds a lot like Google Wave

Extolling the virtues of what messaging should be -- seamless, instant, personal and simple -- Mark Zuckerberg has just launched what sounds just like a socially-aware version of the now-defunct Google Wave.

It is not email -- though you will get a username@facebook.com email address -- but it handles email. It's a messaging platform that interweaves all of your incoming messages, be they SMSes, emails or instant messages into one big dashboard.

The most exciting prospect is the idea of a 'social inbox', which is basically an automatic email whitelist. Instead of being forced to hand-create lists of 'favourite' friends that skip your spam filters, Facebook's new messaging platform will automatically filter mail from your Facebook friends, your friends-of-friends, and so on.

Hacked Microsoft Kinect trained to recognize objects

With the release of OpenKinect, an open-source library that lets PC users interact with Microsoft's depth-sensing and environment-recognizing Kinect, crazy-cool applications of the technology are beginning to emerge. In this video (embedded after the break), one creative hacker mashes together a bunch of open-source libraries to create... well, a modern-day equivalent of HAL 9000.

Using OpenKinect as an interface, OpenCV to process the captured images, CMU Sphinx to recognize speech and Festvox to synthesize speech, one hacker was able to create a program that recognizes random real-world objects and communicates with a user in real time. He notes in the video's description that it's just a 'proof of concept', but one wonders how long it actually took him to cobble it together because the video was uploaded only a few days after OpenKinect's release.

The most exciting prospect though, in my opinion, is that Microsoft must surely be working on their own in-house tools (and games!) to better utilize Kinect's potential. The cocky work of lone cowboy coders is one thing, but next-generation interfaces from powerhouses like Microsoft are something else.

Internet Explorer 9 preview 7 available, takes SunSpider crown; Beta now downloaded 13 million times

As of a few moments ago, you can now download Platform Preview 7 of Internet Explorer 9. The main focus of this update is the continued enhancement of the Chakra JavaScript engine; as a result, IE9 now leads the SunSpider benchmark by a few percent.

Like its predecessors, this preview lacks any kind of useful UI -- but if you have the Beta installed, you can follow Lee's guide to hack the Beta UI onto the preview. The Beta, incidentally, has now been downloaded over 13 million times. We're not seeing significant use of IE9 amongst Download Squad readers, but with almost 4% of Ed Bott'z ZDNet readership using IE9, there's definitely some evidence of its growing popularity. With my sources indicating a January release of IE9, Microsoft really ought to release a second beta...

Anyway, in infinitely more exciting news, there's a bunch of cool new HTML5 demos on the Test Drive site to play around with! Shakespeare's Tag Cloud is very cute (and educational!) Galactic, on the other hand, is an excellent example of the 'Open Web' 3D games that we can expect to see next year. It also acts as a very good benchmark tool -- I may have to do another head-to-head browser shootout!

Update: I just tested IE9 on the 'real world' Kraken benchmark... and it beats Firefox!

Facebook -- with or without Google -- will destroy the world as we know it

On Monday, Facebook announced the launch of a platform that will set in motion a process that will catastrophically terminate the world as we know it. Known by the end-user as the rather demure 'Messages', and internally as Project Titan, it is only those that look toward the future that know its true name: Skynet.

The future can be defined as a flow of time that has the potential to become anything. With an almost-infinite number of possibilities, it's no surprise that we occasionally get dizzily lost in our thoughts of the future. It's also no surprise that most of our life is about making choices, for it is the only way we can control our future. Should I get out of bed? What should I make for lunch? Who will I meet today? Should I ask her out? These are all choices, all decisions that irrevocably alter the future.

Unless we choose for something to happen -- unless we cause an event to occur -- everything else happens to us. When you lose the power of choice, you lose the power to affect your future. You are no longer you -- instead, you are the punching bag of the universe.

Which brings us back to Facebook. We are rapidly approaching a point in time -- a technological singularity -- where Facebook knows enough about you, me and all of mankind that it can make better choices than us.

Aviary adds awesome HTML5 photo editor to its burgeoning arsenal

Aviary, the creators of a huge suite of online editing and creation tools, has just launched a rather suave HTML5 photo editor.

Citing its super-simplicity and embeddableness, Aviary seems to be rather proud of its new creation -- and justifiably so. The editor, no doubt because of its slim feature set, is very quick to load. The interface is snappy, and none of the manipulations or photo filters seem to create any kind of 'lag'. There aren't many functions, mind you (but Aviary says more are coming).

The idea behind the new editor, according to Aviary, was to create a cut-down and customizable editor that could easily be embedded across the Web, on its partners' websites. Of course, while you can just embed the editor, you could just take the code and install it on your own server -- and hack some new functionality into it while you're at it. That's the joy of open HTML5 Web apps, folks! Pure HTML means that it will work on next-generation mobile browsers like Firefox for Android, too.

All in all, the Aviary HTML5 photo editor is nothing short of excellent. If you need to do a quick bit of editing and don't want to play with a Flash editor that's larger and more cumbersome than a rusty forklift truck, try out Aviary's HTML5 editor.

Ever since the introduction of the 350 GT in 1964, every twelve-cylinder Lamborghini has used a derivative of the same engine, straight through the Miura, Espada, Countach, LM002, Diablo, Murciélago and Reventón. Now, the Italian automaker is throwing that old design in the trash bin and starting fresh with a clean-sheet design. And what a design.

Destined for duty in the upcoming Murcielago successor, this 6.5-liter V12 is an all-new engine - designed, developed and produced entirely in-house at the company's Sant'Agata Bolognese factory. It features four-valve cylinder heads made from an aluminum-silicon alloy, short stroke and lightweight construction to deliver an output of 700 horsepower and 509 pound-feet of torque.

Along with the new engine, Lamborghini introduces a new type of gearbox called the Independent Shifting Rod (ISR) transmission. Employing dual shifting rods, the ISR is said to be able to shift nearly 50 percent faster than a comparable dual-clutch gearbox, while weighing considerably less. Real-time discovery of Twitter images with Hashalbum

One of Twitter's greatest strengths is the sheer wealth of data that it produces. Like the Internet itself, though, without search engines, that data is all but inaccessible. Few would argue that Google defined the Internet that we use today, and likewise it is only through ingenious indexing that the Twitter fire hose will ultimately become useful. Which brings me neatly onto Hashalbum, a site that simply searches Twitter for a hashtag (like #tsa), and shows you all of the images contained in that data set.

It's a stupidly simple idea that instantly exposes a treasure trove of funny, poignant and timely images. Supposedly the albums update in real-time, but I can't confirm that -- and I also don't know how much of the Twitter fire hose Hashalbum actually parses. Other than letting you search by hashtag, the site does nothing else.

Of course, because the results are unfiltered and the engine is completely 'dumb' (there's no analysis of the images themselves), the quality of the searches isn't very high. Just like Twitter, Hashalbum produces a stream of random, stream-of-consciousness images -- it's still down to you to pick out the interesting bits, but hey, that's Twitter!

General Motors investing $40 million to offset 2011 carbon footprint [w/video]

General Motors invests in green solutions - Click above to watch video after the jump

General Motors is planning to invest $40 million in a host of clean energy efforts in an attempt to offset around 8 million metric tons of carbon dioxide. The company says the investments will come over the next three to five years and will involve everything from solar panels for schools to encouraging wind farms and forestry projects all over the country. GM is hoping that these efforts will offset the amount of carbon dioxide put out by the 1.9 million vehicles that the manufacturer is expected to sell in 2011

GM says that it has reduced its manufacturing emissions by 60 percent since 1990, and that a separate effort has seen water use during production drop by 35 percent between 2005 and 2009 worldwide. Additionally, The General operates 75 landfill-free facilities worldwide with a total of 90 percent of the company's waste being recycled.

These eco investments will be made via third-party organizations that include the Bonneville Environmental Foundation. Hit the jump for a video and the full press release.

General Motors is boasting that the new microcontroller in the ECM behind the Ecotec 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder in the 2011 Buick Regal is the ultimate power in the automotive universe. According to the company, the computer packs the quickest processing power of any microcontroller in any vehicle on the market right now. The ECU uses three megabytes of flash memory to handle a host of adjustments for things like air intake and "spark optimization." The tech plays a big part in the amount of horsepower and fuel economy that GM has managed to squeeze out of the tiny 2.0-liter.

All told, the ECM is good for 125 million operations per second. Compare that to the 1 million operations per second of the company's first powertrain control module, and you can see just how far on board computers have come since the 1980s. Of courses, given how quickly technology advances, something tells us the Regal's brain won't hold onto its title for long. Hit the jump for the press release.

Hands-on video review of Office for Windows Phone 7

If you weren't aware, it's impossible to take screenshots with Windows Phone 7. Perhaps once it's rooted we'll be able to -- but until then, screenshotting apps for reviews is laborious -- you have to take a photo of the screen -- and the quality is inevitably low.

So, looking for an alternative, I decided to do a video review of Office for Windows Phone 7. It's about 10 minutes long, and the video quality is excellent. You should be able to clearly see the text on the screen, and the audio commentary should be informative (and perhaps even funny).

In the video I step through the three key features of Office for WP7: OneNote (and its integration with SkyDrive); Word and Excel (viewing and editing); and SharePoint integration (though I sadly couldn't get it to work). OneNote definitely stands out as one of WP7's killer features, especially when combined with SkyDrive synchronization. Word and Excel, which lack the ability to sync, seem rather useless in comparison -- but still, being able to view Word and Excel documents on the move is surely a good thing.

DROID gets lockscreen gestures via CyanogenMOD ROM --other devices soon to follow

Those of you out there who like to play around with custom ROMs may have already picked this tidbit of news up -- CyanogenMod releases will soon be getting a cool new lock screen gesture feature courtesy of mtwebster, with an OG Droid version being already available for download as an add on.

Gestures of course, will add the ability to "draw" out anything you wish onto your lock screen and upon doing so, be able to launch an application or activity that has been associated to that drawing. (Kind of like Google's own Gesture Search app.) A smiley face for Facebook maybe a T for Twitter; you all get the drift.  Pretty awesome! And likely something that should have been there from the get go on Android but alas, this why many of us love custom ROMs to begin with. [Twitter / CM Forums]

PayPal to launch a new, social, group-buying tool called Shoptimist

With the a groan-worthy name, and equally tired slogan -- "Positively awesome shopping!" -- PayPal looks set to launch a new service called Shoptimist.

Details are thin, but it looks like Shoptimist will be a Groupon with emphasis on real-world, physical products. Fellow shoppers will band together to get cheaper deals from suppliers -- and the more people that join in, the better the deal. That's where the social aspect comes in: you'll want to add friends to your 'purchasing group' so that you can open up the cheapest prices. No doubt, all of your recent purchases will be fed through to your Facebook wall, too.

There also seems to be a 'sweepstakes' element to Shoptimist -- like this Facebook page for a chance to win! -- but I suspect that's just to drum up initial interest in the service.

7-Zip version 9.20 released, still the best tool for compressed files

7-Zip, one of the most active and mature open source projects, has just reached version 9.20. Work on Version 9 only begun last year, in 2009, but it's already far ahead of the old version (4.65) in terms of speed and functionality.

If you've never used 7-Zip before, now's the time to start. In one fell swoop it removes any need for other compressed file managers. It's faster and slimmer than WinZip, and lacks the nag screens of WinRar -- and it supports more file formats to boot! After installing, 7-Zip (or '7z') sits innocuously in your right-click context menu, ready to decompress almost every archive under the sun.

With version 9.20, you can even decompress some EXE, FLV and SWF files, peek inside NTFS, FAT and VHD files, and the command-line tool has been beefed up considerably. There's also localizations for Hindi, Gujarati, Sanskrit, Tatar, Uyghur and Kazakh, meaning there's more than 70 supported languages.

Speed up Firefox page loading time without using a RAM disk

Yesterday we wrote about moving the cache of Firefox or Chrome onto a RAM disk. Instead of loading cached images and data from the hard drive, it loads from memory, which is a lot faster. It turns out, though, that Firefox can do this without using a RAM disk -- you can simply do it with about:config.

Just follow these instructions -- and don't worry, if you mess it up, you won't break anything.

• Type about:config into the address bar
• Type browser.cache into the Filter field
• Set browser.cache.disk.enable to false (double click it)
• Set browser.cache.memory.enable to true (double click it)
• Right click > New > Integer; type browser.cache.memory.capacity; press OK
• Type in 100000 (this is equivalent to 100 megabytes); press OK
• Close all Firefox tabs and windows, and then restart the browser

If you want more than 100 megabytes of cache -- if you have lots of spare memory, or you're prone to mammoth browsing sessions -- type in 500000 instead for 500 megabytes of cache. To confirm everything is working, visit about:cache and you should see some 'Memory cache device' information.

I'm currently unable to benchmark this change (Firebug doesn't work with FF4 Beta 7!) but in theory it should be just as fast or faster than the RAM disk approach.. Lee has been using it for a few hours and he says page loads are much faster. If you use Firefox, try it out and let us know whether it feels faster or not!

7-Zip version 9.20 released, still the best tool for compressed files

7-Zip, one of the most active and mature open source projects, has just reached version 9.20. Work on Version 9 only begun last year, in 2009, but it's already far ahead of the old version (4.65) in terms of speed and functionality.

If you've never used 7-Zip before, now's the time to start. In one fell swoop it removes any need for other compressed file managers. It's faster and slimmer than WinZip, and lacks the nag screens of WinRar -- and it supports more file formats to boot! After installing, 7-Zip (or '7z') sits innocuously in your right-click context menu, ready to decompress almost every archive under the sun.

With version 9.20, you can even decompress some EXE, FLV and SWF files, peek inside NTFS, FAT and VHD files, and the command-line tool has been beefed up considerably. There's also localizations for Hindi, Gujarati, Sanskrit, Tatar, Uyghur and Kazakh, meaning there's more than 70 supported languages.

General Motors is boasting that the new microcontroller in the ECM behind the Ecotec 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder in the 2011 Buick Regal is the ultimate power in the automotive universe. According to the company, the computer packs the quickest processing power of any microcontroller in any vehicle on the market right now. The ECU uses three megabytes of flash memory to handle a host of adjustments for things like air intake and "spark optimization." The tech plays a big part in the amount of horsepower and fuel economy that GM has managed to squeeze out of the tiny 2.0-liter.

All told, the ECM is good for 125 million operations per second. Compare that to the 1 million operations per second of the company's first powertrain control module, and you can see just how far on board computers have come since the 1980s. Of courses, given how quickly technology advances, something tells us the Regal's brain won't hold onto its title for long. Hit the jump for the press release.
