The 7 Most Hackable Android Smartphones

Two types of people want to buy an Android smartphone: those who simply don't want an Apple product, and those who want to trick out their phones fancier than a Honda Civic from the set of The Fast and the Furious. If you're in the latter crowd, you may be familiar with at least some aspects of the hardware-modding community. But what of the layman who wants to pimp his phone and hasn't a clue where to begin?

MasterImage working on 3D screens for cars

Google Earth in 3D

With 3D technology slowly making its way into homes and onto portable game consoles, it was just a matter of time before the tech filtered its way into cars. MasterImage, one of the companies that has pioneered glasses-free 3D screens, is reportedly on the verge of signing a deal with a handful of automakers and airlines to bring its wares to the transportation industry.

Roy Taylor, MasterImage's executive VP, declined to tell the Hollywood Reported which OEMs and airlines it was in talks with, but confirmed that its patented displays could reach certain planes and cars in the coming years.
However, don't expect your next sat-nav to get all Minority Report just yet - the 3D screens by MasterImage will be used for rear-seat entertainment, allowing passengers to download movies and games using next-generation mobile broadband technology to keep the kiddies distracted while on the road.

Special Ford suit used to mimic the elderly finds use among architects

Architects from Hahn & Helten GmbH recently visited the Ford research center in Aachen, Germany research center to try out the company's Third Age Suit. Ford built the suit a few years ago to help engineers design cars around the physical limitations of old age, and it's gaining traction outside the automotive world.

Restrictive apparel simulates the physical limitations associated with arthritic joints, failing eyesight and poor hearing. Since its inception, the suit has been instrumental in the design of cars with backup cameras and a more elderly-friendly "H-point," known to us non-engineers as the point where your hips swivel when getting into a car.

The suit works by restricting the flexibility of the upper body with a corset-like harness that hinders range of motion. Similar harnesses make moving the elbows, knees and feet a chore, and the suit also simulates decreased dexterity and sense of touch with latex-lined fingerless gloves.

Now, the suit is being used by European architects to design more elderly-friendly houses. According to Ford, 30 percent of Europe's population is expected to be 65 or older by 2060, making accessibility an even more important part of design.

Ford says architects came away with a new appreciation for the limitations of old age, and how to design around them. Hahn & Helten got particularly sharp insight into designing senior-friendly stairs, and seating that doesn't require you to bend your knees past 90 degrees, making standing up easier. Check out the full story from Ford after the jump.

Futuristic Pod Carriage Would Make a Royal Wedding Worth Checking Out

There was a royal wedding today? You don’t say!
I’m not too much for pomp, circumstance, or royalty, but if the princely couple came out in this carriage, I think I might actually care (a little).
Reza Esmaeeli, a London-based designer and architect, sought to throw out the traditional, old-fashioned carriage the royal couple rode in and [...]

TiGr Bike Lock: Thin, Strong, Stylish

TiGr is a newly invented bike lock which uses a titanium band instead of a chain, shackle or cable. The lightweight “bow” is secured by a titanium-encased Abloy Protec steel lock, and is long enough to thread through both wheels and around a secure post.

Mozilla Messaging reintegrates with Labs, unifies focus on Web-based communication

Mozilla Messaging, citing Mozilla's increased focus on Web-borne communications, will be reintegrating with Mozilla Labs.

The Messaging subsidiary was formed in 2008 to focus on Thunderbird, but given Mozilla Labs' current focus on identity and contact management, it now makes sense for the groups to be merged. Thunderbird will be unaffected by the change -- some URLs might change, but that's it -- and presumably Messaging's F1 and Raindrop will thrive in the Labs playground.

What this means for the end user -- for the hundreds of millions of Firefox users -- is that the next big additions will be communication- and messaging-oriented. Contacts and F1 will be almost certainly be baked into Firefox 5 or 6, both of which will be released this year -- and, who knows, there might be something else even more exciting up Mozilla Labs' sleeve!
