Internet Explorer's decline leaves Firefox as #1 browser in Europe

Proving the Old World can still be positively refreshing when it comes to some things, the unstoppable decline of Internet Explorer in the motherland has finally left Firefox with the European pole position.

Internet Explorer, across all versions, lost about 8% of its market share between December 2009 and 2010. Firefox, on the other hand, by losing just 3% of its share, has ended up on top. The biggest winner, and seemingly the only browser to gain market share, is Google's fleet-footed Chrome browser, which began the year at 5% and ended at almost 15%.

In the rest of the world, Internet Explorer is still by far and away the most popular browser (at least according to StatCounter). In fact, the only other territory where Firefox is in the lead is Antarctica...

Ferrari's Montezemolo blasts "pathetic" four-cylinder engine formula?

Cylinders have been dropping off Formula One engines like limbs off the leprous over the past several years. Where twelve cylinders once ran soon became ten, then eight for the current formula and plans are now set to switch to just four by 2013. And Luca di Montezemolo, for one, is not happy.

The Ferrari chief, whose company builds twelve- and eight-cylinder engines for its road car division, has emerged as a leading figure in opposition to the new regulations. And while he reportedly initially said his disappointment would not turn to interference, the powerful former founding president of the Formula One Teams Association (FOTA) has now said he's looking for allies among other team leaders and engine suppliers to push back the implementation of the new turbo four regulations.

He may, according to reports, find an ally in Norbert Haug. The Mercedes-Benz motorsports chief notes that the current V8 engines are relatively low in cost as it is, not to mention the fact that starting a new engine design from scratch - no matter how cost-effective it might be in isolation - will still cost more than continuing with the same engines already in place.

Windows for ARM processors is coming; but is it 7, 8, or something else?

Microsoft is to announce a new version of Windows designed to run on ARM processors at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in January. It is not yet known whether this will simply be a port of Windows 7 to the ARM architecture, or an entirely new species of Windows OS.

ARM chips, due to their lower power consumption and smaller footprints, are used in almost every mobile phone and tablet on the market, including the iPad. With Windows Phone 7 (which runs on ARM chips) already making inroads into the smartphone market, Microsoft is now turning its eye to the tablet pie. An ARM build of Windows 7 would be nice, but surely too cumbersome for low-powered tablets.

To be honest, we have no idea what Microsoft will demonstrate at CES in January. A cut-down version of Windows 7 that can booted from firmware would be the most obvious candidate, but at the same time, it could easily be a tablet version of Windows Phone 7 (Windows CE). Either way, one thing's for sure: it will have to be awesome.

Google teams up with Coca-Cola for a festive Android treat

Adding to the magical wonder of Coke's 'Snow Globe Santa' Christmas commercial, Google's AdMob team has collaborated with the One True Soda Master to create a truly festive Android experience: a snow globe live wallpaper (QR code after the break).

The live wallpaper -- which basically turns your Android phone into a very cute snow globe -- will be promoted via the AdMob network, which many free apps use to create revenue. When users see the ad, they'll be able to click straight through to the Android Market and install the live wallpaper. Google's even produced a video showing you how to install the wallpaper, which feels a bit like overkill, but it's included after the break anyway.

It's at this juncture that I like to remind people that Santa Claus's red-and-white garb was not created by Coca-Cola. It may be true that Coke popularized the color scheme, however. Before Coke's legendary commercialization of Santa, he usually wore whatever the local custom dictated. The original Santa, however, Saint Nicolas, was a monk; and monks at that time wore red and white.

Oprah may have given away a whole fleet of 2012 Volkswagen Beetles on her TV show, but now VW is partnering with Gilt.com to offer its 2011 Jetta sedan up at a very, very low price. The new Jetta has just landed at dealerships around the country, priced from $15,995, but Volkswagen will be giving away three Jettas to members of the Gilt flash sale site for $10,000 less than the normal starting price. That's right, a brand new Jetta for under $6,000.

A total of three Jettas will be given away, starting on Wednesday of this week (one car per day). On December 15 this special offer will only be available to Gilt members with the mobile application (iPad, iPhone, Android, etc.), and the remaining two Jettas can be had by the full raft of Gilt members.
