Apple has just published a press release that confirms a January 6 opening of the Mac App Store. It will be available in 90 countries, and feature free and paid apps. Mac OS X Snow Leopard (time to upgrade from 10.5!) users will need a free download via Software Update before they can use the App Store.

The Mac App Store, if it isn't obvious, aims to revolutionize the distribution of PC programs in much the same way as the iOS App Store. The idea is to provide quick and easy access to the latest and greatest in Mac OS X apps, and will feature categories, staff picks, and customer reviews and ratings, just like the other App Store.

The only comparable service to the Mac App Store is Valve's Steam, and it will be interesting to see whether Apple's new offering nibbles away at Steam's market share. More importantly, it's now only a matter of time until an equivalent marketplace emerges on the Windows platform; and indeed, could the fragmented Windows ecosystem even support an App Store?

Vizio, the company known for its TVs and Blu-Ray players, is set to unveil its first phone as well as a tablet, both to be based on Android.

The phone is said to be called the Via Phone and will sport a 4-inch touchscreen, 5MP rear camera and a front-facing camera. The tablet reportedly will be 8 inches, will also have a front-facing camera, and have three speakers for sound.

That's probably the tablet Vizio teased ever so briefly at the start of the Rose Bowl on Saturday -- check out the video after the break. [via Engadget] It's claimed that Vizio will discuss these products on Monday, ahead of CES, but will also have product announcements during the official show. It will be a crazy week with phones and tablets galore. Stay tuned! [via WSJ]

Microsoft is to announce a new version of Windows designed to run on ARM processors at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in January. It is not yet known whether this will simply be a port of Windows 7 to the ARM architecture, or an entirely new species of Windows OS.

ARM chips, due to their lower power consumption and smaller footprints, are used in almost every mobile phone and tablet on the market, including the iPad. With Windows Phone 7 (which runs on ARM chips) already making inroads into the smartphone market, Microsoft is now turning its eye to the tablet pie. An ARM build of Windows 7 would be nice, but surely too cumbersome for low-powered tablets.

To be honest, we have no idea what Microsoft will demonstrate at CES in January. A cut-down version of Windows 7 that can booted from firmware would be the most obvious candidate, but at the same time, it could easily be a tablet version of Windows Phone 7 (Windows CE). Either way, one thing's for sure: it will have to be awesome.

Earlier this week, the ink dried on a deal for Navteq to acquire Trapster, the speed trap and road hazard tracking company that makes GPS apps for iPhone, Android and Blackberry. Navteq's interest in Trapster is obvious: One of the world's largest mapping and sat-nav software companies needs more crowd-sourced traffic information. With over nine million downloads, Trapster has both the reach and programming knowledge to expand the depth and breadth of the firm's traffic data.

According to Autoblog sources familiar with the matter, five companies were interested in acquiring Trapster, and an outright bidding war was waged by three of the startup's suitors. In the end, Navteq brought home the brass ring for an undisclosed amount.

Trapster was established in 2003, growing considerably once it received funding in March of 2009 which allowed it to bring on a handful of employees.

Trapster users can expect their service to remain intact, and with the engineering resources of Navteq integrated with the current apps, traffic, road hazard and maybe even police data stands to increase considerably.

A little sooner than expected, Skype has just launched a new version of its iOS app [iTunes] that enables Skype-to-Skype video calls, via Wi-Fi or 3G.

Those lucky enough to have an iPhone 4 or 3GS, or 4th generation iPod touch, will be able to make two-way video calls with any other Skype user, including desktop and laptop PC users, and presumably other mobile Skype users on Android or BlackBerry.

This software update also affects the iPad and third-generation iPod touch, but they can only receive video, rather than send it.

The big news, of course, is that Skype is allowing video calls over 3G. It remains to be seen what the mobile operator's response will be, once people start making use of free, high-bandwidth video-to-video calls. We always figured that the Wi-Fi-only restriction of FaceTime was enforced by mobile operators, rather than Apple!

Oprah may have given away a whole fleet of 2012 Volkswagen Beetles on her TV show, but now VW is partnering with Gilt.com to offer its 2011 Jetta sedan up at a very, very low price. The new Jetta has just landed at dealerships around the country, priced from $15,995, but Volkswagen will be giving away three Jettas to members of the Gilt flash sale site for $10,000 less than the normal starting price. That's right, a brand new Jetta for under $6,000.

A total of three Jettas will be given away, starting on Wednesday of this week (one car per day). On December 15 this special offer will only be available to Gilt members with the mobile application (iPad, iPhone, Android, etc.), and the remaining two Jettas can be had by the full raft of Gilt members.
