Mozilla pays 12-year-old $3000 for finding critical vulnerability in Firefox

Alex Miller, a 12-year-old from San Jose, California, just cashed a $3000 check for finding a buffer overflow bug in 'document.write'.

The bug, which was was one the major security vulnerabilities fixed in this week's releases of Firefox 3.6.11 and 3.5.14, was discovered by Alex after spending 'about 90 minutes each day for 10 days'. In other words, he pored through code for 15 hours and made $3000, or $200 per hour. Not bad for a 12-year-old!

If you want to get in on the bug bounty hunting action -- because let's face it, if a kid can find a bug in 15 hours, an adult could do it much faster -- just head on over to Mozilla Developer Central. Check out the Firefox source and start looking!

IE9 Developer Preview 6 launched, and new Test Drive site now live

To celebrate the opening of the Professional Developer Conference 2010, the Internet Explorer team has just flipped the switch on a very sexy new version of the Internet Explorer Test Drive site.

Not only is Developer Preview 6 now available (don't get too excited, non-developers; this is another UI-less build), but there's also a ton of new demos that you can try out. A few of you might recognise SVG Helicopter, and Flickr Postcards is quite possibly the cutest application of HTML5 and CSS3 that I've ever seen.

As you can see in the screenshot above, there's a rather cute easter egg for Chrome 8 users, too!

Navigon rolls out MobileNavigator for Android phones

Navigon no longer makes hardware for sale in the U.S., but if you still pine for the days of the 2090S you bought from Radio Shack then they might have some software for you. The German company has released an app for Android phones (to go with its already released app for the iPhone) with a few features aimed at enhancing your journey.

Reality View Pro is meant to provide better intersection visuals, Traffic Live and red light and speed camera warnings assist with getting there quickly and without extra premiums. Google search keeps you in touch with the local action, and text-to-speech can read street names so you actually find that action.

Speaking of Google, though, since the Android OS is a Google property, most of those phones will come with Google Navigation free. If you're looking reasons to spend $39.99 on the Navigon option, Reality View might do it - an augmented reality function that provides information overlays when you point your phone's camera at a point of interest. The Navigon app also comes with the whole U.S. road map preloaded, so no waiting for a connection if you get thrown off course. Oh, and that $39.99 price is only for two weeks - after that it goes up to $59.99.

Zune annual subscriptions now available, cheaper than Spotify

I installed Zune for the first time today (wow, it's pretty!) -- but that's not the news! Here's the news: you can now grab a 12-month subscription to Zune for the price of 10 months. It's $150 for the year (a saving of $30!) or £90 if you're from the motherland. Spotify is currently £9.99 per month, with no 12-month option.

This lower price point, when accompanied with the continued roll-out across Europe, means that Zune may soon rule supreme on both sides of the Atlantic. Don't forget that you can download 10 free songs per month with Zune, too! And there's certainly no denying that the Zune desktop app is both more attractive and feature-rich than Spotify's.

I don't know which service currently has more subscribers, nor do I know the specifics on which service has the most tracks available in a given territory -- they both tout 'over 10 million', but I'm sure it varies from country to country. It certainly would be nice if this is the beginning of a price war, though. $15 per month is certainly a good deal, but $10 would be an even better deal.

Is the Android Market down for you? (Update: Google says it's fixed)

Here we go again, folks. The Android Market seems to have taken a bit of a header this afternoon. We've gotten apps to download find on some devices, and not so fine on others, so maybe the worst is behind us. What say you all?

Update: The AndroidDev Twitter account reports that everything should be fine now. The whole thing started about noon Pacific time and "lasted a few hours."
